Newbie Quilting and Giveaway

Day 1

Yes-sir-ee~I promised to try my shaky hand at making my very first quilted table runner for Valentine’s Day and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.  This beautiful pattern comes from the “21st Century Charm School” blog, and it’s called All Boxed Up.

Oh, and I am very brave–just so you know.

Felt pretty confident with this actually, I mean, after all–I’ve been sewing since I was a kid.  So what’s the big deal?

“Sew the squares together…” yeah, yeah.

Not so tough…

but wait!

What the HECK?! Why are my edges not matching up?!

The pattern says, “be sure to pin you pieces together as you sew, so that your edges don’t turn out uneven.”

Oh, surrrre. NOW you tell me. I’ve discovered that even if you read the instructions ahead of time, it’s very important that you then follow them.

Rats.

Meet my little friend Jack…the seam ripper. We’re very close.

So by the light of the moon, we ripped…Jackie and I…and …

this is what straight edges look like. This girl can be taught.

Now I bet you’re thinking to yourself,  “Launi, what is your problem?! Why I could whip up one of these lovelies in twenty minutes.”

Well, here’s your chance to show me.

21st Century Charm School and Prairie Grass Patterns are giving away not one—but two– Table runner gift packs to two lucky readers! All the amazing MODA fabric you need to create your own beautiful-beyond-belief table runner!

To enter, click on either of the links above and go to the shop. Come back here and tell me which is your favorite pattern.  Then I hope you’ll wish me luck with my first quilting project. I’m gonna need it!

I’ll announce the winners on Friday morning, February 4th at 10:00 am.

Run, run. Fly, fly. Tweet. Facebook. Tell your friends. Enter. Enter.

  1. Good luck! Some people make it look so easy, I have tried a few times and not been successful yet. I will still keep trying though. And LOVE the Prep School Knockout pattern on Prairie Grass Patterns.

  2. Good Luck Launi!! I love what you are doing. I think it is going to look great when you are done. Those sites have some great tutorials. I am going to go back and look for a beginner project for myself!!

  3. Way to go Launi! I knew you could do it! I can’t wait to see what it looks like quilted. I use my seam ripper way more than I would like to. The Amish put a mistake in every one of their handmade quilts because perfection is only supposed to be for God. I use that excuse A LOT in my quilting.

  4. I envy anyone that can sew. I see my sister and sister in law sew, but I have yet to build up the confidence. Maybe one day I will be a wiz at this. Good luck Launi. You will make it amazing 🙂

Such a cute pattern by the way.

  5. Good for you! I’m hearing a lot of frustration from others as well, maybe this little tid bit will help. The 2 most critical steps in quilting are accurate cutting and the 1/4″ seam. I noticed on the picture of you sewing that the needle is right in the center of the foot (just like we were taught in home ec for a quarter inch) but unless that’s a quarter inch foot you are not sewing a quarter inch seam. I have to switch my needle position one notch to the right to have a true quarter inch and believe me it will make all the difference between HUGE frustration and success.

  6. Oooooh. I’d love to win and fuel my fabric addiction. I love the Prep School Knockout pattern.

  7. I love the Prep School Knockout pattern. I do a lot of sewing but, like you, have never tried quilting. I would love to give it a try. By the way, I love your blog. I check in every day to see what’s new!

  8. I am also a professional seam ripper, amateur sewer/quilter. 🙂 I like grammy’s scrap basket. Good Luck on your quilting….I am continually impressed with you Anderson girls and mama!! Way to go!

  9. I like Grammy’s Scrap Basket. 🙂

I’m new to quilting, so my seam ripper and I (haven’t named mine – yet) get together quite often. I hope all your quilting endeavors turn out! 😉

  10. Oh freaking days… how on earth can I pick one pattern when they’re all SOOO great!

I LOVE Dancing in the Wind, but the colors of He Zigs, She Zags are so eye catching. Each of them make me smile in a different way.

Good job being brave and sewing the table runner. I’m scared of sewing! 😉

  11. I think you are brave! I want to learn how to quilt, I’ve even started buying supplies for it but I still haven’t gotten up the guts to get started. April is so talented, I like the lantern pattern a lot. I hope you have lots of fun with your new adventure!

  12. Such a cute tablerunner and I love “He Zigs She Zags.” It is such a fun quilt. Good luck with your first project – my first was a “Grandma’s Dishes” with circles and it almost killed me!!

  13. I told my grandma, the quilting queen, all about these websites. She sounded interested in checking it out. I really like the prep school knock out, but I think my fav is he zigs she zags. I have recently started getting into quilting and could use a new project, I also just moved into my own brand new house and bought a brand new table, which could really use a beautiful new table runner. hint hint 😉

Not everything you try can go PERFECT the first time… so one little problem, but you fixed it and that’s what counts. You go girl!!

  14. Here’s another vote for Prep School Knockout!! I love them all, though! Good luck finishing your table runner! It looks like things are going great now 😉

  15. I love the Long and the Short of it! What a great pattern! I have just gotten my sewing machine and crafty space setup and I want to make a quilt. Never done it before.

So good luck with your first pattern!

  16. I really do like all of the patterns! It’s hard to choose a favorite. I like both of the scrap basket patterns. The colors choices are all great too, which really makes the patterns look even more fabulous!

Good luck Launi! You’re pretty amazing so I’m sure you’ll pull this off without a hitch!

  17. Love love love the Prep School Knockout! I’m a sucker for argyle!
Good luck with your quilt, my biggest downfall when it comes to quilting is keeping my seams accurate!

  18. HE zigs she zags is soo cute! I made a quilt with my grandmother a few years back its so fun but takes hours of hard work! GOod luck!!
