Chompy Dolittle

While Mommy was getting a few errands finished today–Chompy and I strolled down to the pet store–where she B-lines it straight to…the kittens. She loves them and this little guy loved her right back–through the glass.

I told her this little puppy was called a “Pug,” and she said, “I can like a Pud.”

She was a bit braver than I am about all the aquarium critters–that creep me out. She stuck her face right up there by a 90 foot Salamander. Blaugh…

Turtles are better…but still…I’m going to hang back here a bit.

Now we’re talking. Chompy and I love birds and this little blue lady was amazing. I always have this overwhelming urge to open all the cages and shout, “Fly…fly!”

But so far…I’m not brave enough…

to spend the night in jail.

These four baby love birds were so adorable all huddled together and timid.

This seems to be where we came in—doesn’t it? Chompy and her kittens. She said we need to come back tomorrow or the kitty would miss her and cry.

Of that…I have no doubt.

Bird Watching

We’ve been pretty popular with the birds these days. They just flock to the deck like crazy, wild animals…ok, you know what I mean. Lately, we get dozens of the little critters every day…and all because I bought the wrong seeds. You see, I was in a hurry at the store and grabbed the first bag I found that said, “Bird Seed,” and bought it. But when I got home, I found the bag totally filled with black shelled sunflower seeds.

To my surprise, a whole different bunch of birds come around now. Normally, we have Starlings and Robins–that don’t want seeds anyway…they want my strawberries–and sparrows and finches–and an occasional dove or two.

But now–we’ve got very bold quail and blue jays coming right up to the windows to squawk when the feeder is empty..which is actually kinda scary, so we keep it full.

Ahhh…communing with nature.

and getting snubbed when the black seeds run out.

Sheesh.

{ His Eye Is On the Sparrow }

Fragile treasure found by Dane in the branches of a tree–the morning after it was hit by lightening

“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.”

Do No Harm

Our baby bird met a little friend in the yard.

It was a sweet little baby bird that was too little to even be afraid of us. Baby Chomp got so close we were nervous that the little fellow would get stepped on–so we had her move back a bit.

He just sort of stood there and let us look at him–but we were careful not to touch him or get so close that his mama wouldn’t take him back. We told Chompy that his mama would come and take care of him until he could fly if we didn’t touch him.

Ooooh she sure wanted to just reach out and snatch up that little birdy–but she resisted. We went for a walk to visit a neighbor and when we came back the bird was gone. Spirited away–I’m thinking–by a little birdy mama who is certain that her baby had a very close call today–with those scary humans.  Little do they know…

we come in peace.

Birdy Berries

I have this funny little dream–of walking out into the yard, on a cool summer’s evening…

with a pretty little china saucer in my hand…

and picking fresh strawberries, right there, from my own little patch and sitting on the porch, in a swing–eating them with real cream and just a pinch of sugar.

So we planted a few, and they grew into a few more…and each year

we add a few more, in the hopes that someday…

my silly dream will finally come true. I even have the china saucer…and the cream.

But we have one problem.

Anybody know a sure fire way to keep the robins out of my strawberry patch–that does not involve letting Bird-slayer Beanie out?
