Granny Square Baby Cubes

Oh, the joy of the sweet, basic crocheted Granny Square and all it’s little pokey holes just perfect for those dimply little fingers. In fact, it was so satisfying to put this small cube together that I couldn’t help myself…

Β I had to make more in different sizes. If you’ve ever made a granny square, you know– it’s easy to become…

addicted.

The hardest part of the whole project was finding the foam rubber to go inside. Turns out, JoAnn’s is the place. I found large 2″, 4″ and 6″ scrap pieces–labeled “upholstery foam” for about $10 each. Huge pieces.

If you crochet then making the granny squares, cutting out the foam and sewing them all together is an absolute cinch. And with the huge pieces I have left…let’s just say…

there’s no end in sight.

Β

AND I’m getting no complaints from my pattern tester either!

  1. Wow! They are beautiful! You need to teach me how to crochet things like that. When I have grandkids I’d love to be as cool as you with my craftiness. πŸ™‚

  2. I’m sorry. You may find granny squares addictive but I HATE those things! I would rather pull my hair out one strand at a time than make another granny square! πŸ˜•

    That being said, your blocks are adorable. You enjoy making them and that’s all that matters.

  3. Ooooh–ok, then. I can see that you–my dear–need a bit more excitement in your crochet world. Hmmmm? It just so happens that I have a few new patterns up my sleeve that will hopefully shake things up a bit. I get bored with doing the same one over and over too. So watch for some Granny-Squares-meet-Red-Bull type projects coming up. :}

  4. @Launi, Bored?? I am not bored with granny squares because I refuse to do them any more! I just HATE them with a purple passion!!

    Isn’t it strange how one person can love something and thoroughly enjoy it while another absolutely loathes the same thing (that’s me and granny squares). Guess that’s why the world is so interesting. πŸ˜€

  5. The big cinch would be in your world, not mine. They are so cute and I like looking at the fun things you make but don’t ask me to try doin’ it. No way thanks anyway.

  6. Okay Aunt Launi!!! I was just thinking of those the other day. I need you to make me some for Tait for his first birthday. Also, I have a project that I need you to help me with.
    Benjamin is going to be “Where is Waldo” for Halloween. Do you think you can make him a hat for it? I have been meaning to ask you for weeks now.

  7. Measure his head–around, and then from the crown of his head to the top of his ear. Get that to me asap and I’ll do it. When is Tait’s birthday?

  8. I will get those measurements when he gets home. Tait’s birthday is December 3rd πŸ™‚

  9. Love these. Do you have the pattern that you used? I watched a 7 month old little boy and I would like to make him one.

  10. Fair enough. And I’d rather be poked in the eye with a stick than run up a mountain…ever. So I guess we’re even. :}

  11. Hello,

    I just found this site and I am totally exited!! These Baby Cubes are sooo cute and perfect!! I will do some for my cousins’s daughter (at christmas she’s 3 month). Really really nice pattern!
    Thanks for sharing!

    best regards

  12. My mother in law who died at 97 years old made these for each and every child, grandchild, great grandchild and great great grandchild in the family. I have my first grandchild due in June 2017 so I’m picking up the ball (or cube as it were) and will make these for all the new babies .

  13. I love these! What a great idea. I’ll be scoping out Joann’s tomorrow for the foam. It always befuddles me when I see someone reply negatively. Why not click out and find something that does intrigue your interests…geesh!…move on.
    Anyway, Launi, please don’t let it squash your creative spirit…you made me very happy with your pattern today πŸ™‚
