Kitty Feet

A zillion years ago, when I turned 12, my cute little daddy made me this pretty cake for my birthday.  At the time, we had just dealt with my cat stepping on one of his cakes. We had no idea how it happened, but there it was–the paw print smushing into one discreet corner of the thing. It was a fiasco and he had to make a whole new cake. Oooohh…he was mad.  I even thought that maybe…maybe, my kitty loving days were coming to an end.

A week or so later, when he’d cooled off, he made this cake for my birthday. Oh, do please note the kitty footprints all around the edges.

It was an incredibly sweet thing to do…considering.

I’ve hung on to that silly green kitten for all these millions of years because every time I put it in a giveaway box, or go to throw it out, I remember my funny dad making that cake to show that he wasn’t mad at me or my cats anymore…

and I can’t do it.

Pretty sure anything that feels like that sort of love…

is worth holding on to.

Here Birdy-birdy-birdy

If you look verrrry closely, you’ll see our baby bird, signing her version of the word…

She can’t help herself because you see–each day, more and more of our birds come back.

We can see them jostling for the seeds in the feeder.

We can watch them sitting on the deck rail all puffy feathered in the rain.

We can hear them cooing and singing us awake each morning.

And friends, we are very, very happy about it, because we’ve been waiting for a long time…

all of us.

And so Jiff is now banned to the basement until she learns better manners.

After all, we have guests.

Happy National Bird Day everyone!

Happy Birthday Kristen!

Cat Calls

“Uh-oh. The phone. I got it.”

“Excuse me, sir…sir?”

“It’s for you.”

“I’m sorry. He can’t come to the phone right now.”

Kitty Secrets

Pretty sure that this old gal…

has got the secret to a happy life.

Hunker down…

stay loose…

and always, always…

take plenty of naps.

Ever wish you were a cat?

Recycled Thought Process…

When you look at a typical pile of cast off clothing, it’s likely you have the same conversation going on in your head that a lot of us do.

“Can someone else wear that?”

“Should I just donate it to DI or Good Will?”

“Is it unwearable?”

“Should we throw it away?”

But lately–since my beloved sewing machine has made it’s way home, every too-short shirt and badly fitting sweater has begun morphing in my mind–to something…

Suddenly, I’m seeing the dreaded, disturbing collection as a fabulous store of potential—spread out in front of me…

waiting to see what’s next for them in the universal “repurpose” life plan…

My head seems filled with 10,000 little sticky notes…

giving a new direction to something old or torn or droopy or faded or just plain ugly.

It feels good to recycle paper and plastic and unplug the cell phone charger and turn out the lights and use less water and sew pretty handbags out of evil plastic sacks and make things we need right now out of things we thought we were finished with.

This all may seem like tiny drops in the big, huge world bucket—but doing something always beats doing nothing. So, because we honestly really love this place, this pretty, little planet…we choose something

and it feels very right.
