There’s a magic feeling about…

pretty colored string.

September 4 035

a pile of it…

August 20 010

a spool of it…

or a carton of it.

Doesn’t really matter because it’s always the same with ambitious stuff like string.

It wants to do more than sit on the shelf or on the spool or in the box.

It wants to BE something…

or a lot of somethings.

Either way—I like to believe it’s the wish of all miller’s straw…

The Sailor and the Flapper…

june-10-003

For the past few days–it’s been a bit rainy out.  Which means that I have no earthly choice…

I have to play with cotton and yarn and crochet hooks.

Feels so perfect to sit somewhere soft and warm…or cool…and let the yarn and hook just go where they want to go.

Here’s where we ended up. Tell me what you think…

because it’s still raining.

Cotton Love

One of my very favorite things…a mystery package, on the porch!

I have one child that gets goose bumps when she walks up the office supply aisle in Staples. Pens, notebooks, paper clips just really work for her.

Then I have this other daughter that gets lightheaded over…dancing shoes. Ballet, ballroom, character or Latin. Doesn’t matter what kind–she’s got them.

I have another child that would walk to the mall, barefoot, in a blizzard for a sale at Archiver’s. Scrapbook supplies, stickers and grommets make her very, very happy.

Well let me show you what does it for me…

Look at those perfect colors! Just imagining all the places this thread will go and what it will become in it’s second life. What beloved little soul will wear it or play with it and in what way?

Ahhhh…the potential for 100% cotton joy is staggering indeed. Better get a move on…

So—what thrills you to your toes? Share,  share…

Milliner?

All the stuff 001

Back in the olden days if a lady wanted a new hat–she simply went down to the milliner’s–that’s someone who makes hats—and had one made–especially for her.

These days if you need a hat, you go to Target or some other playful place and see what you can find. It’s not quite the same as having something made especially for you but where would you go to find a milliner in this century anyway?

All the stuff 006

Well, from the looks of my sewing bag and my room—I’m about ready to hang a sign on the door with that very title on it. Or to be more easily understood by the general population, it would read: “Hatmaker.”

ABC 066#1

For some odd reason, since I found this “Flapper Hat” pattern last week, I can’t seem to stop making them.

ABC 027

Recently while cleaning out the closet, I found my beloved “Peaches and Cream” 100% Cotton thread stash. Something snapped…and the madness began.

It’s the perfect size project to haul around and work on any time…any where–doctor’s offices, track meets, while watching a movie or to pass the time while waiting to pick someone up from somewhere.

No matter how many other things were scrawled on the “to do” list–it was just so much more fun to make another hat.

Now, every time poor Lily walks past me, I’m yanking a hat down over her head–to make sure the size is working. It is. She’s a darn good sport–so far.

However, to be brutally honest, even Beckham wasn’t safe from the “let’s just see if this will fit…” fest. He was not a fan.

So–help me out here. Besides decking out my grandbabies–I need a new purpose for the irrational cap-making behavior.

Tell me which of the four–not yet claimed by a local baby—that you like the best.

That should do it.

Now I’m off to make more…more…more…

Chronic Crafting

April and I went to a “Handmade Boutique” this last week and saw—and worse–couldn’t resist so many things.  There was jewelry, clothing, art work, handbags, doll houses, stationery, baby toys–even homemade jam. Admittedly, April came out with more than I did, but she’ll have to confess her own sins…if you get my drift.

Here are a couple of my “indiscretions.”

The first thing that caught my eye was this stained glass bird. You can’t see it here but his tail is pink. I’m a sucker for lavender and pink. I hung him in my bedroom window and he simply sparkles up the whole room.

Then there were these “Babushka” magnets. They reminded me of my far away boy–so they came home with me too.

We even went a little nuts and bought one of those ridiculous cupcakes that seem to be all the rage these days. Somebody ate it before we could get a picture. Sheesh.

Ok, ok–it was pretty dang good.

For me, the best part about going to these things is that for a long time after, I can’t seem to stop…you know…making stuff. There’s just something very empowering about being surrounded by incredibly crafty souls.

The inspiration rubs off and makes me excited to try things like this “Flapper Hat” for Lily.  It feels so good to have my hands busy no matter what else is going on–I end up with projects in every room, and one in the car so that no time is wasted.

The more I make the more I can’t wait to make. It never ends!

Must. Find. More. Crochet. Thread. Now.

Chronic:  “Something that  has been going on for a long time. It may never get better. It is something you will have to live with.”

heh, heh, heh…
