Choosing Colors~ Lesson 1

DSC_0001 (2)

Forever and ever, I’ve had a hard time picking out my colors for granny squares and stripy projects. It always looked to me like people just threw their scraps together and everything turned our perfect. Trouble is that whenever I did that, it looked positively nasty and I would end up yanking it all out or throwing it all out. Either way, it was a waste of time and/or money.

I was just fussing about this very subject the other day to my daughter, and she said, “Ok, look,” as she took a rainbow of primary colored yarn off my shelf, “these are the basic colors…right?”

“Right,” I said.

“They go well together.”

She set them down and picked up a pile of pastels and said, “Basically the same colors, only they’ve added white to them to make them softer and lighter. Do you see that?”

“Ummmm, yeah. I think I do, ” I said.

They go well together,” she said.

Then she picked through my beloved Caron stash and chose all of the lovely ones in this basket and said, “Ok, what about these? What can you tell about them?”

Yikes. I hate pop quizzes.

“Well,” I said, “they are…darker. But just a little.”

“Ok, mom, if you were a painter, what would you add to make your primary colors just a bit darker?”

“Mmmmmm,” thinking, thinking, wishing I had taken a painting class in my entire life, thinking, thinking, “…maybe…black? But just a speck.”

“RIGHT!!” she hollered. “And THEY go well together. See, mom, it’s not that hard.  You can totally do this!”

And without further adieu–

I did.

Pink Swirly Turtle

I made one of these cute little turtles for Miss Chompy when she was a baby.

When a friend saw it, they said, “When I have a baby–I want one of those!”

Now that day is here. She has her own sweet little one. So, naturally, she needs her own baby turtle too. I found the original pattern at Lion Brand Yarn‘s website. I added a double row of pink shell stitches around the edges…just for fun.

Do you think she’ll like it?

Have you EVER seen anything so adorable in your life?!!

I found this sweet little fishy baby on b.hooked crochet and I just keep staring and staring at it. The pattern is there for FREE too. And you know what I say…you can’t beat free.

If only I knew someone who was having a baby girl soon.

Oh, wait…

I do.

Granny Ripple For Baby

DSC_0268
We have a couple new babies making their appearance here in the next few months–which for me, means that I have some huge hookey work to do. Babies—babies! Tons of them!! Could anything possibly be more fun?

My first project is this pretty little Granny Ripple. I found the instructions over at the Lazy Hobby Hopper. Turns out, she’s got step by step instructions for this lovely stitch and since I’ve been pining away since I first saw it, I figured now’s my chance.

I was very unsettled about the colors that the mom chose–just never seen this combo together. It worried me so much that I hesitated to even start because I just pictured myself pulling alllll those stitches out. But my worries were silly because as you can see, the colors are…gorgeous.

This is a soothing, almost sing-songy pattern that you’ll end up doing mindlessly before long. I love this kind of work because I don’t have to think about anything while stitching.

Anything, that is, but the pink, fluffy bit of sweetness that will be nestled in it’s warmth in just a few short months.
