100 Happy Days #46
Oh, how we love the early morning of July 4th!
For years and years and years we’ve gathered at the same park…
at 6 a.m. sharp…
with a zillion other crazies…
to be part of the balloon festival in Provo.
It always starts the same way, with the lead balloon taking off first.
while the others are still getting ready.
It takes dozens of torch blasts to fill each balloon…
and get them to settle up straight.
Then one by one they start rising up into the air.
These guys threw out tiny parachutes to the children below.
Now and then an unfamiliar balloon appears in the sky. Hello yellow–you’re new.
I’m sure that some day it could happen…
that we get tired…
and bored…
and lazy…
and choose to sleep in…
instead of coming here…
in the wee hours of the morning…
before normal people are even awake…
just for a little of this…
and this…
and this.
Yeah, maybe.
When pigs fly.

“I am apt to believe that it (Independence Day) will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shows, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

100 happy days #45…with a bit of sadness mixed in.
Woke up the other day to this outside the window.
Luckily, we knew ahead of time that it was happening…but still…
after as many years as we have lived here…
and after as many years as this old tree has lived here…
Â
it was still a shock to see it coming down.
Believe me, we don’t take this kind of thing lightly, especially when it’s such an ancient, beautiful tree.
   Â
But, sadly, the wind storms that we’ve had lately have taken out so many big limbs and damaged so many others, that we realized that the next limbs to go would likely take the neighbors roof–or worse yet, their children’s play set–out with it.
THAT was too big of a risk and it wasn’t worth taking. So the only thing to do was to remove the risk completely.
But ooooh, it was a sad, sad day.
We’ll certainly miss that old guy in the corner.

My lovely pale pink roses that used to be a deep, exotic violet. But since I don’t know enough about roses to make them behave properly–they’ve gone completely wild and have a mind of their own. I think I might just like them better–in spite of that…or perhaps because of it. Sometimes wild is exactly what something needs to be, don’t you think?
Sitting outside in the back for the very first time this summer. Breathing in the fresh, warm air and watching my pretty mountains just sitting there too…as they certainly should.
Looking up at the lonely little choke cherry tree, that likely won’t bare any fruit at all this year. The birdies will be sad about that for sure. The willow that has grown next to this tree for a million years was removed last week–had to be done–but still, I wonder if our lone tree will be brave enough to carry on without his old friend. I suppose we’ll see.
Just the right amount of sun and water for this girlie–also a first for the year. Finally, finally warm enough for the swimsuit and sprinkler to come out. Oh, she’s a brave one with a hose, this girl. The ice cold mountain water would send most kids screaming indoors–but not this water baby. She squeals at every shower and runs right back through for more. Like her mama that way.
Mr. Beany having his first–I think–experience with an ice cube. He licked and licked and then stopped suddenly. Tongue freeze, no doubt. Then he acted mad at me the rest of the afternoon, turning his back whenever I’d talk to him…the pill.
A warm summer breeze blowing just sturdy enough to give the wind chime a run for it’s money. It was fun to hear and nearly as fun to watch. I imagine a wind chime has a lot of waiting to do in it’s lifetime–for just the right breeze to set it free.
And what about you? What things are you loving today? Hmmmm?

I do believe that I have fallen in love…with a crochet book…
or two…
or three. All of them by Edie Eckman–who is positively brilliant and completely understandable. Finally.
Edges, borders, granny squares, circles, triangles and connecting them all together into one incredible…something.
The possibilities are endless. I’m thinking that some sort of “Crochet Along” is in order…you know, like a book celebration or something. It could be so much fun! Perhaps, some of you will even join me…hmmm?
I’m off.
Party to plan, you know.
heh, heh, heh.
