Matchbox Advent Calendar

This has to be the cutest little advent calendar that ever walked the earth!

ahhhh….ok, so…you know what I mean.

Acorn 080

Teeny, tiny drawers filled with teeny, tiny prizes. Absolutely adorable and better still–it cost well under $5 to make. You could actually make one of these for each of your children and spend less than you would buying them a Happy Meal. And this was just soooo fun.

Acorn 006

The main purchase is the little match boxes. I found them at the grocery store and get this–packs of ten were 93 cents! You’ll need 3- 10 packs.

Acorn 009

Empty the matches into a large Ziplock bag and put them in your storage.

Acorn 016

Be on the lookout for tiny prizes…

Acorn 019

You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find once you start looking.

Tape the boxes together in groups that will be stacked up in columns of 8 boxes.

I did a 3 stack and a 5 stack. Then I did the rest in groups of 4.

Now group them together and make sure they are all level with each other.

First I taped two columns together and then all three. Don’t worry about how ugly the tape is–it’s not going to show.

Acorn 033

Find some skinny, Christmasy ribbon and cut into 24 pieces about 3 inches long.

I used wide packaging tape to stick them in loops to the bottom of each box. It’s more sticky and sturdy–and we want the pull loops to stay put. I experimented with big loops and shorter loops–the shorter ones worked much better.

Number the boxes as you go along–that is much easier than going back and working around all the ribbon.

Acorn 038

Now cover the back and sides with your favorite Christmas wrapping scraps.

Acorn 045

Now, have fun finding tiny little prizes…

Acorn 068

and flat-ish candy…

Acorn 058

to fill the drawers.

Now in just a couple of days—let the merry countdown BEGIN!

Holiday TV Guide

Scan10060

Back in ancient times–during the holidays, every kid scoured the TV Guide and highlighted the Christmas Specials so that he could plan his evening schedule accordingly. Because in those days, long before videos or DVDs or Cable TV with 10 billion channels, or TiVo–if you missed the one night of the year that “A Charlie Brown Christmas” or “The Grinch” came on TV, well…you would be a pitiable creature indeed. And, oh–you wouldn’t get another shot at it for…a…whole…year.

Gulp.

Copy of Scan10060

The next day, you would sit alone at recess while your friends ran around reliving each festive scene and reciting every single “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown,” line–sparkly lights and tinsel included. But you–you sad, sorry thing–you would sit quietly in shame without uttering a word, because YOU, unforgivably…had missed it.

Noo. No. It’s not a risk most kids would ever take.

Not for a bucket of cold, hard, cash.

Copy (2) of Scan10060

But these days, you get lots of chances to see most of the good shows, and too many chances to see all of the lame shows–but either way, it’s nice to know what is playing when. With that said, here is a current list–starting today of anything even remotely related to Christmas. I even found an old favorite that I haven’t seen in a million years. Wahoo!

If you’re a Christmas TV Special Fan, and in honorary observance of “World Television Day”—I hope you love this!

Oh, and I’ll post this in the Holiday tab as well so you’ll be able to find it easier as it gets closer to Christmas.

“That Holiday Feeling”

Copy (2) of Scan10038

The tradition at our house has always been that the day after Halloween, we can pull out the Christmas music. Not the movies or the decorations–none of that–but the music is on! We are quite faithful in our focus of the Thanksgiving holiday because it is so lovely to spend so much time thinking of how greatly we are blessed. It’s just that at our house we prepare for Thanksgiving—while listening to Christmas music.

Scan10041

The first year I was married we had no Christmas music at all. Nothing.

Then my sweet childhood friend Mary Jo asked if we would store a few things for her–as she was moving back to California. In the things to store that she generously said we could use, was her stereo system and a pile of LPs–record albums–in case you didn’t know. One of them–to my utter joy, was called “Merry Christmas–36 Great Favorite Songs-36 Great Artists.” Silly name. Fabulous music.

Merry Christmas LP

But finding out that my time with this set up was about to end and that a friend was coming to pick up all her things way before Christmastime, I devised a plan. Scurrying around, I found an old cassette recorder and a blank tape and decided to record whatever songs I could before the friend pulled up in the driveway. Now please realize that this was long before the “plug in this and that and push a couple of buttons and now it’s all perfect,” days. I had to play the music and put the tiny little microphone right up against the stereo speakers to get the best sound. I was in such a hurry that I didn’t even know some of the songs that I was recording–but it would be something for our Christmas atmosphere anyway. It ended up taping the last song filling one side of that cassette before the guys knocked on the door. I felt pretty pleased with myself.

Little did we know at the time that that silly little bootlegged tape would become the family favorite for all my children and the very first thing they want to hear when they wake on November 1st.  One year they each received their own copy of the tape in their Christmas stocking. They love it.

So, as silly as it may seem to play a little Christmas music for you–I’d really like to share the sound that has thrilled my family for over 30 years now–and quite frankly, still does. Oh, and if anyone knows the secret to getting a cassette tape–in this case, a priceless one–transferred to a cd–would you kindly share the info with me?  Tapes don’t last forever and we want to keep this one.

I hope you’ll humor me and listen–just this once. Thanks–and here it is…

Everybody’s Slippers

Aaa 084

Here it is—“the” pattern. The reason it is called “everybody’s slippers” is because you really can adjust the size to work for babies, children and grown-ups pretty simply.

Caps--slippers 022

As you can see, I’ve made them for everything that walks on two legs at this place. My friend Lynnette has asked for the pattern since last year and I guess I’m about ready to try my hand at writing it all down. The pattern I’m sharing will be for a woman’s slipper. Be kind–I’m new in these parts.

If something is unclear–please email me.

Here goes…

August 20 010

I”m using Peaches and Cream 100% cotton–it isn’t as sturdy as wool, but I like the feel better. Choose the yarn you like most against your skin–that will be the best. I use an “I” or “J” hook.

Pull stitch through all remaining loops on hook.Fasten off.

With needle and yarn, sew the top part of slipper foot together leaving the ankle area open. Sew up the back of slipper as well. Turn slipper right side out.

Chain two 65 stitch “laces” and thread them through the loops at the top of the ankle area of slipper.

Tie in a bow.

These slippers make wonderful Christmas presents and can be made to fit any foot just by increasing or decreasing the starting chain and making more or less rows to fit the individual foot.
